Inflatable vs frame shelters

The comparison is not about which is better. It is about whether your constraint is money or logistics.

A frame shelter costs less per square metre and lasts longer. An inflatable shelter erects in a fraction of the time, packs to a fraction of the volume, and needs neither a crane nor a trained erection crew. If your constraint is capital cost and the structure stays put, buy frame. If your constraint is getting a working building onto a site that has no road, no crane and no time, buy inflatable.

The logistics argument

Packed volume decides how many units fit on one truck, one aircraft or one boat. For a disaster response or a remote site the binding constraint is usually not the price of the shelter — it is how much of it you can physically get there, and how fast it becomes usable once it lands.

This is why humanitarian and defence buyers pay the premium, and why commercial buyers with a fixed site usually should not.

The cost argument

Per square metre of covered floor, frame construction is cheaper, and the gap widens as span increases. Over a multi-year deployment on one site, a frame structure will normally be the better purchase on cost alone.

Where the honest answer is 'neither'

If the site is permanent, has road access, and the building will be there for a decade, both of these are the wrong product and a conventional building is cheaper and better. We would rather say that than sell into a bad fit.

Which one for your operation

Choose inflatable when

  • Units redeploy between locations
  • Transport volume is the binding constraint
  • Untrained personnel must erect it

Choose frame when

  • The structure stays in one place for a season or longer
  • Capital cost per m² is the decision criterion

  • You have the crew and the equipment

How long does it take to set up an inflatable shelter?
Small units are minutes. Large-span units are longer and depend on blower capacity and anchoring. We publish times per model once verified, not before.
Do inflatable shelters last as long as frame shelters?
No. Fabric structures have a shorter service life than metal frames. Expected life depends on climate and use, and we do not state a figure without test data.
Can inflatable shelters be repaired in the field?
Yes — punctures are patched with a repair kit. This is a maintenance task, not a structural failure, provided the construction is chambered.
Which is better for a field hospital?
Inflatable, in most cases, because the deciding factor is how fast the space becomes usable and how much of it fits on the transport available.
