Air-filled vs water-filled flood barriers

Both are called inflatable flood barriers. One needs a water source before it works. That is the whole decision.

Water-filled barriers are tubes or bladders pumped full of site water; the water provides the mass that resists the flood. Air-filled barriers hold their shape with air pressure and are anchored to the ground. Water-filled units are heavier, more stable, and cheaper per metre — but they need water on site and time to fill. Air-filled units deploy without a water source and weigh a fraction as much in transport.

Why water-filled dominates the market

For long runs along a river or around a construction dewatering site, water is free, plentiful and right there. Mass is the cheapest way to resist a head of water, and a water-filled tube gets its mass for nothing. Dam-It Dams, AquaDam and Aqua-Barrier all built their businesses on this and it is the right answer for those jobs.

Where water-filled stops working

A shop doorway in a flooding street. An underground garage ramp. A basement plant room. A site where the flood has not arrived yet and there is no water to pump. In every one of these the water-filled barrier's advantage becomes its constraint — you cannot fill it until the thing you are defending against arrives.

This is the case air-filled exists for, and it is a real one.

The honest limit on air-filled

Water pressure against a barrier rises with the square of height. Air-filled units resist that through anchoring rather than mass, so anchoring quality and ground condition matter enormously, and there is a height beyond which the approach stops being sensible.

We will not quote a height without structural data behind it. Anyone who does is guessing with your site.

Which one for your site

Choose air-filled when

  • No water source at the point of deployment
  • Deployment window is minutes, not hours
  • Openings rather than long runs — doors, ramps, gates
  • Storage between floods must be compact

Choose water-filled when

  • Long continuous runs
  • Water is available on site
  • Construction dewatering with a planned schedule
  • Lowest cost per metre matters most

Are inflatable flood barriers reusable?
Both types are. They are cleaned, dried and repacked. This is the main advantage over sandbags, which are single use and slow to fill.
How long does it take to deploy a flood barrier?
Air-filled units are limited by blower capacity — minutes for an opening. Water-filled units are limited by pump rate and run length, typically longer.
How does a water-filled cofferdam work?
Water pumped into the tube provides mass that resists the head of water outside. The heavier it is, the more head it resists — which is why it needs water on site.
Can I use these instead of sandbags?
For openings and defined runs, yes, and deployment is far faster. For irregular gaps and improvised defences sandbags remain more adaptable.
